8/10 Li'l Biz Staff review, 12 August 2010
Ok, this one's a heavy mofo. A split between Batillus and Hallowed Butchery, both of which i have never heard before but am suitably impressed by one first listen. Batillus kick things of with an impressive display of power and might. I guess this is predominantly doom type slow-core stuff but with the dynamic of a much faster, livelier band along with a strong psychedelic influence that keeps things interesting. The riffs and heavy as hell, the vocals are awesomely gruff and the whole tone is dark as fuck without being a bore-fest. Flip this bitch over and you get a taste of Hallowed Butchery which is a solo effort from Ryan Scott Fairfield. The opener kicks of with Nordic style black metal vocals over a compressed as hell, sludge riff coupled with some sweet analogue keyboard tones. It's not long before it drifting into the abyss, slowing to an almost sloth-like pace and mutating into an semi-industrial psychedelic nightmare. I reckon you'll like this. I do. For fans of Minsk, Isis, Harvey Milk, Neurosis, Wolves in the Throne Room and that sort of stuff.
