This follows the CD only Menagerie compilation on BR with eight exclusive tracks from Akron/ Family, Joanne Robertson & Matthew Asworth, WAND, Natural Snowbuildings, Married In Berdichev, Moon Duo, The See See and Seadog. Akron/ Family open the set with 'East Coast'; a breezy acoustic number in their inimitable style. Then onto 'Home of Dogs' from Robertson & Ashworth with a slow ethereal folk droner. WAND is up next with his distinctive brand of country' folk. This is of course James Toth/ Wooden Wand.... Then the first side closes with a killer from Natural Snow Buildings with 'Case Resurrected' and listening to it, it really couldn't be anyone else. The strings in particular here are most arresting; proper goosebump stuff. The Moon Duo 'Run Around' tune is another highlight; an upbeat full on psych fuzzer. Worth the asking price alone for the Moon Duo and NSB tracks... You know the score... This also comes with a zine that features artwork by Jake Blanchard, Pete Fowler, Andrew Rae, Will Sweeney, Sarah King, Solange Gultarte, James Trimmer / Mirt and Mat Pringle.
8/10 Nick Robinson Customer review, 2nd March 2014
Compiled by illustrator and Tor Press label head Jake Blanchard, this collection of eclectic songs is somewhat influenced by Blanchard's own post-psychedelic artistic style. Mellow folk tones, touches of garage rock, waves of drones and washes of vocal harmonies all glide through the eight tracks. Whilst there may not be too many songs that stand out in their own right, the blend of styles works as a whole and is best listened as such. Not to say the artists involved - Natural Snow Buildings, Akron/Family and Moon Duo being the better known - aren't worthy of mention, but this set is very much a sum of its parts. An accompanying booklet features artwork for each track by various illustrators, Blanchard and NSB's Solange Gularte included.
