9/10 Dave Staff review, 17 September 2010

This is a strange, but amazing offering. Graphic novel meister Alan Moore has released a spoken word record, documenting the rise and rise of British comics, from they grainy two shots of the late 20s early '30s to the more colourful, violent and multi layered comics of more recent times. The whole thing is set to atmospheric soundscapes ably made by a veritable superband. There are members of Mogwai, Godflesh and Faith No More's Mike Patton collaborating on this fucker. These guys have lent a real air of greatness to the proceedings. Not that it isn't a real treat anyway. This box set comes with photographs of the whole recording process and massive thick vinyl and CD versions of the album. The music is as brooding and dark as the River Styx, and Alan Moore's voice sits at the helm, like Charon taking you across the murky depths. You don't have to pop a gold coin into his mouth though, which is a good thing. Its a hugley informative and sprawling opus that tells you everything you ever wanted to know about comics and writers but were afraid to ask. It mentions the big man himself. No not Jimmy Nail or "Fatty" Foulk but Stan Lee and waxes lyrical about some of his most hallowed creations and the high levels of escapism that people can derive from the world of comics and there characters. It's a must for all comic fanciers and music geeks every where..there really should be Moore records like this..sorry..
