The debut album by this band totally knocked me sideways. Merging the otherworldly & esoteric sounds of the mid 80s NZ underground with strong Paisley Underground instincts & a hint of The Dream Academy & VU (well most of the NZ bands were strung up on Lou and Co. anyways!) The debut album by this band totally knocked me sideways. Merging the otherworldly & esoteric sounds of the mid 80s NZ underground with strong Paisley Underground instincts & a hint of The Dream Academy & VU (well most of the NZ bands were strung up on Lou and Co. anyways!) This 5 tracker is an essential counterpart to that S/T classic, has the same moving chord changes yearning vocals & shamble-fuzz-jangle-rumble that made the album so evocative & authentic! This pricey import platter also devotes a whole side to a relatively epic track called 'Waiting Out the Storm' which features some gorgeous blurred guitar textures & whirring flecks of organ amongst other things too awesome to encapsulate in a review. In spirit, possibly coming somewhere between late period SY & the original Sister Ray seems to be both the quest & the eventual result. But I think they've a MantleSound(tm) of their own too, totally groovesome & intoxicating. I think these boys & girl are quite possible my favourite Americans of the moment.
