This is the second LP we've been fortunate enough to get our hands on from the Carnivals label (the first being an outstanding split LP from A Middle Sex and Temperatures) and it's another delightful slice of wax if I may say so myself. I know little about Hype Williams but he/she/they(?) have gotta be blazin' pounds 'cause this LP is packed with treacle dipped, ultra mong'd beats and exotic improv jams reminiscent of a bunch of stuff I've been bonging out to recently (James Ferraro… Sun Araw… Ducktails… Skaters) but with its own distinct flavour. Opening with tranquil synths and delay saturated beats H.W. invite you in to their domain and it's not long before the lifepipe's start flying about and all sense of grounded reality is lost. Exotic instrumentation and bizarre primitive sampling techniques are totally abused here but you also get your fare share of live improv jams too. But it's the final track on side A that truly takes the crown. It sounds like Art of Noise in dramatic slow-mo and even features that crazy human voice synth sound they are so fond of. In short, it's a sloth-like masterpiece. Anyway, that's enough talk from me (it's late), I'll leave the B-side to the imagination but expect freeform improv fun and cut up beats of the highest lo-fi calibre. An amazing find from what's shaping up to be a great label. Gotta be album of the week lads? Of course.
