Aw man the Books are back! I got completely obsessed by The Books when Lost & Safe came out. I couldn't put their records down! 5 years later comes 'The Way Out' on their new home Temporary Residence! In that 5 years I got married and I'm gonna get divorced, I had a kid, I got gradually more stupid and the centre of me grew. A lot has happened! So what has happened in Books world? Possibly a lot but after a few listens to this new album it doesn't sound like a massive leap forward. I wouldn't really expect that. I'd expect it to sound like The Books who are apparently in a genre of their own. They make alien sounding pieces of music which don't really sound like anything else... There's maybe a bit of Laurie Anderson and Talking Heads in there. It's very New York sounding! I like the inventive use of samples and the weird noises and sounds they use to create these weird pop masterpieces. They're a band you just need to listen to and make your own mind up. You're either gonna find it genius or supremely annoying. Me?? I love it!
