Wow, I've got another husband and wife duo here.. They're all the rage this week. I was instantly keen on this one when it was played the other day and I'm even keener this time around. It's a little bit of a departure for Olde English Spelling Bee, surely our favourite peddlers of hypnagogia and outsider oddness, being one of the most traditionally structured and certainly the folkiest thing I've heard on the label so far. Don't get me wrong like, there's plenty of weirdness to go around and the overall effect tends towards the heavily psychedelic but many of the songs here are built upon catchy, poppy vocal melodies - gorgeously enunciated by a voice which often reminds me of Broadcast's Trish Keenan in its tone and delivery. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if there was a fair degree of similarity between Pigeons' influences and those of Broadcast - acid folk, classic psychedelia, Silver Apples, traditional song forms etc. etc. This LP's a completely lovely way to spend forty-odd of your minutes so be sure to give it a little look.
