These folks are new to me, they've got an LP coming out pretty soon on SHDWPLY and this 7" features the skills and prowess of one Gary War so the credentials are there. Opener 'Taal Compass' is a lilting ballad saturated in distortion and bolstered by some cheeky Indian percussion and (a personal favourite) kalimba. Main man Robert Robinson's voice is so wrought with melancholy you get the impression he may break down at anytime and begin weeping stylish lo-fi tears all over the shop. Tender stuff. B-side 'Wide Open' sees Gary War get in on the scene with some cosmic keyboard assistance. This tune begins as a bit of a drifter but eventually kicks off with a crescendo of ambient sounds, reversed cymbals, percussion and some real nice synth patterns. Totally good.
