His Greatest Misses by Robert Wyatt

His Greatest Misses is, as you might expect, atypically  idiosyncratic collection from Robert Wyatt. It trawls his albums from Rock Bottom (1974) to Cuckooland (2003) for some of his forgotten gems as well as actual hits in the likes of I am a Believer and Shipbuilding. This is a new edition on Domino of this one time Japan only collection.

Well one of our greatest songwriters needs no introduction from a snotty oik like myself. The guy is in a weelchair but can still metaphorically kick most of his fellow post 60's singer songwriters into a cocked hat I feel. It's the whimsical sensitivity, grace & considerable beauty of his songs that win every time. This is a Japanese market only compilation of cherry picked tunes that Domino have "found" and therefore repromoted at a much more affordable price and is thus THE perfect gateway to his mellow English soul, psych-jazz & folk-rock inflected output. For me his work grows on you gradually like a sweet smelling fungus that you could end up wearing as a rather spiffing jacket if it weren't for the fact you cannot wear your fave records. There's a total genius at work here, an elegance, eccentricity & intelligence that is often unsurpassed in this tainted industry & highly infectious for it! His version of 'I'm A Believer' is a treasure & yes, 'Shipbuilding' is on here, albeit much later on. No "frontload with the classics" for this guy. Cos they're ALL classics!! He's also probably one of the only British "pop" pianists whose work I fully admire, long may he rein supreme!!
