- Round & Round by Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti

I've been looking forward to this one 'cos it's artwork is The Best. Of anything, ever. You can't even see the back on our site but that's amazing too. This is Ariel Pink's 4AD debut which could be a worrying time for long-time fans, what with him presumably having an actual recording budget and shit now. 'Round & Round' keeps a little bit of his trademark haze but you can actually pick parts out fairly easily now and the poppiness he's always had is more to the fore than I've ever heard before. Check my triple rhymes! I guess the question is whether his tunes can hold up when they're exposed that little bit more and on the evidence of this I don't think there's much doubt as it's tidy, intelligently written tune with loads of interesting touches in the verses contrasted with a big, anthemic chorus which literally leaps out of the speakers at you; I'm pretty sure I'll be cursing its catchiness when I'm humming it on the way home in about five minutes' time. The B-side is cool too with its mid-80s Scritti Politti vibe and a few extra layers of sonic murk. A very fine single!
