- Dettmann by Marcel Dettmann
Jeff Mills, Luke Slater, Joey Beltram, Damon Wild, Mike Dearborn, Frankie bones, Adam X, DJ Skull, Steve Stoll, Surgeon, Tresor, Synewave, Juan Atkins, Transmat, Basic Channel, Mike Dred, Woody McBride, The Mover, Surgeon, Robert Armani, Dave Clarke, Vainio, Kim Rappati etc. etc. These producers/ labels have undoubtedly been the soundtrack of my life. I'm a techno freak 'til the day I die. Things got quite stale for a while though with tons of generic boring recycled loop based tracks and millions of tracks aping the same tribal groove. More recently some fresh talent has my attention, one of those artists is Marcell Dettmann who's been putting out some solid tracks on his own MDR imprint. I'm yet to be convinced, (even after a few listens) that he deserves a place in the hall of fame of the aforementioned artists (which is contrary to the stuff I've been reading online about the man) but his debut long player is certainly a step in the right direction. No doubt he records with the space of the infamous Berghain clubs dancefloor in mind. These tracks are constructed for maximum effect on their Funktion One Soundsystem but simultaneously flow as an album listening experience.. The material is solid and functional, with some dubby elements and a focus on the 4/4, as one would expect. Don't get me wrong, I really do like this a lot, but it has the same effect that Monolake has on me: I love the sounds and the overall feel, and technically it's brilliantly produced and executed, but it lacks the emotional impact that I find so rewarding in techno. I'm not talking about huge euphoric tracks either, I like it dark and raw. There certainly are a few tracks that make this owning though and I'd say if you're into Sleeparchive, Monolake, Sandwell District, Rob Hood etc. then get on the case.
