8/10 Staff review, 18 March 2010

Spartak are an Australian duo comprising of Shoeb Ahmad (guitar, electronics) and Evan Dorrian (drums, percussion). Verona is the follow up to 'Tales From The Colony Room', released a while back on hellosQuare. Slightly more focused and melodic than their previous output, Verona sees the two experimenting with new instruments and new sounds to create a looser, free improv sounds with a keen ear for melody. This ain't no noise for noise sake stuff, more a considered well conceived experiment in modern cathartic rock with the influence of This Heat and Pere Ubu (amongst others) being apparent from the outset. Not that Spartak ever really rock out, they never do that...more they take the original foundations and instruments associated with rock and take them to new and floaty places. Verona certainly has a little of the ambient about it but it's also kinda noodly in a post-rock/jazz/chicago (Tortoise, Isotope 217, June of 44) kinda way and makes for perfectly blissful listening. Check it out.
