I'm reasonably new to this chap's work but the 'New York: London: Addis' comp that came out a while back blew my face off. I never thought I'd like Ethiopian jazz but Mulatu is the god of it by all accounts so therefore he seems like the best starting point. This is his first new album proper since the early 80's so you'd hope it was a goodie. Mulatu Steps Ahead features a few reworks of older tracks from the 60's and 70's but the rest of the album is new material. This is late night material..... and I think to enjoy it properly you need to be smoking and sat somewhere dark with a drink (preferably alcoholic). Here Mulatu has blended Western and Ethiopian jazz styles and created a forward thinking classic sounding album. We've played this a good few times in the office and this is one of the handful of records that absolutely all of us like..... Smooth and creamy...
