PLONK. That's a piano going PLONK. SCREE-EE-SCREE-EE-EE-EE. That's a scraped violin going SCREE-EE-SCREE-EE-EE-EE. That's me cheapening the frighteningly deep research into sound and sound-creating objects which it appears Kiva undertook in their fifteen or so years of existence. My understanding of reading the press release is that they were a loose collective based around two key members who were dedicated to harnessing the chaos and unpredictability of sound in the hope of creating a genuinely usable new language. A very worthy goal but when the music's taken purely on it's own terms it's hard to describe it as anything other than quite sparse, atonal improv making use of a range of acoustic instruments. It's the sort of thing which doesn't ever work at all well in our office but I reckon I'll really enjoy sitting at home, flicking through the booklet, getting more into the theory and really listening to it properly. I'd have to say that it's probably best to steer clear if you've misplaced your academic avant-garde ears though.
