Static Caravan once again delve into the folk oevre with an LP by Men An Tol called 'Through the Quoit'. Now a lot of these modern readings of the Fairport Convention template can seem rather forced and a little insincere. This, however does seem to be a lot more natural take as if the band were born to play this music. The melodies and harmonies are complex without seeming fiddly and the dynamics of the playing are pretty spot on. Guitar and flute solos are kept to a minimum and the natural elements are left to shine through with warm acoustic guitars, organs, accordians and pots and pans production behind the lovely female vocals (with the odd baritone male in the background) . Comparisons can be made to the aforementioned Fairport, Sandy Denny but most strikingly Pentangle to whom they most closely resemble. More modern travellers such as Lucky Luke, Trembling Bells and The Accidental also spring to mind.
