Not had the fortune to really get my teeth stuck into Jawbox before. This 1994 classic has been given a passionate dusting-off after languishing out of print for years. Impassioned post-hardcore or maybe embryonic "emo" is the best way to describe their thrilling, brooding rhythms and spiky full-on guitar led dynamism. Lumped in unfairly with the relatively bland Sunny Day Real Estate et al, this a much fiercer and impressive band. Although this major label debut possesses more commercial leanings, their pounding, propulsive Dischordy rock demands to be amped up so that you can take advantage of the clean rumbling bass strides, steaming drum rattle, abrasively chiming walls of guitar and the melodic rush of the vocals. Just thoroughly engaging & intelligent guitar music with a healthy bite, this hasn't dated in the 16 years since it initially hit the shelves. Kudos to Bob Weston for giving it a fine sonic polish too!
