6/10 Oliver Customer review, 9th July 2014
Any Frabbit fan would fully understand that the lyrical and musical genius of Hutchison & Co. in 2008’s Midnight Organ Fight would be a hard act to follow. Which unfortunately is the case here. Unlike its predecessor, it needs quite a bit of patience till it properly gets itself going. Things does not serve much to add to the album other than to frame itself against Swim Until You Can’t See Land and Man/Bag of Sand with their constant repetition of themes begins to drone and lose its effect. The growing popularity of the band is evident through the production. The raw energy that filled the first two albums feels as though it is missing here, lessening the atmosphere that suited the tone. It is clear however that he’s cheered up a bit through the abundant poppy chorus’ . There seems to be a repeated sense of urgency within the album, where guitar and percussion continually work towards a climactic chorus certainly suited to a live audience (i’ve seen them three times and the energy continues to amaze me). Don’t get me wrong, this album is by no means bad, it just seems to lack the raw energy that made the previous two albums so great. The listener needs to keep digging beneath the surface, whereas MOF left so much exposed. The husky vocals seem largely cleaned up, unfortunately my need for a miserable deep Scottish bloke leaves me to keep digging out the older albums, and leaving this to gather dust.
