Where are we in the great intergalactic Sun Ra catalogue? Well, On Jupiter is a funk album of sorts, recorded in the late 70’s no less. Ra engages with what was going on down in the streets but from the perspective of his own spacemind. The Solar Arkestra follow gamely, and another unique Sun Ra artefact was created. Reissued by Art Yard.

On Jupiter by Sun Ra and Solar Arkestra

8/10 Jack 30th January 2016

This is a mini album, and it immediately followed Languidity. Made for Sun Ra's Philadelphia jazz imprint, Saturn (incidentally, the planet that was Sun Ra's home, true believers), this album was Sun Ra's brilliant stab at funk. If Languidity was Sun Ra's dance album, this is most certainly his funk album. The definite highlight is "UFO", which is an eight minute long piece that is surprisingly focused for Sun Ra; there are blaring guitars, a masterful trumpet, all of which is placed on top of virtuosic electric piano.
