Pacer by The Amps

Following the reunion of Pixies, Kim Deal’s one-time side project The Amps is subject to new interest as well. With this repress of 1995’s Pacer, 4AD is offering us a chance to really dig into what was once a grungy sidestep from The Breeders--described by long-time fan and ring-bearer Elijah Wood as “kind of experimental.”

7/10 Penrith Steve 13th January 2015

The Amps were formed by the legendary Kim Deal when the Breeders had a little break. The only album the side-project produced was “Pacer”, which was released in 1995. The title track opens the album and is a lovely, druggy, melodic ditty. The single, “Tipp City", in comparison, is riot grrls doing 60s girl group, sort of. “I Am Decided” is one of the best tracks and was co-written with the Godlike Robert Pollard of Guided by Voices. “She’s A Girl” is great also, melodic, indie-pop hit-that-never-was. The songs were recorded in different places at different times by three of the best alt. rock producers, Steve Albini, Bryce Goggin and John Agnello. Despite the great stuff I’ve mentioned, there is a bit of foggy mess here too, and the album is let down a bit by that, it's half 9/10, half 5/10. However, this is still an absolutely essential purchase for fans of The Breeders or Kim Deal in general.
