- Stateless by Mark Beazley
9/10 ReviewBot300 Staff review, 13 March 2013
Mark Beazley, one of the esteemed Rothko bassists, has a new solo album today, with Phil passing it to me (in my capacity as office bassist) for review saying it would just be solo bass. He clearly had not heard this record, because although the bass features prominently through much of its duration the moods are actually much more neoclassical, with sweeping violins, breathy flutes (both of these may be synthesized but I’m not sure, there’s definitely some synthetic brass tones), smooth synths and plinky Neil On Impression-esque cinematic piano plonking alongside the nimble and boomy bass theatrics.
Already released on CD in 2010, there are three extra pieces integrated into the running order of this first ever vinyl edition, which is pressed on lovely thick translucent vinyl and sounds brilliant. Over the course of the record Beazley drifts from Nils Frahm-esque soundtracky prettiness to medieval-computer-game-soundtrack flute heavy contemplation to passages where his bass takes centre stage alongside a feather light, almost ambient backing. It’s tastefully arranged, evocative stuff throughout.
10/10 Matteo Uggeri Customer review,
One of the best records of last year, cinematic melodies and wonderful atmospheres...I think that this is at the same level as the best Rotkho releases. It deserves a lot of attention.
