Don't know much about Emmett Kelly, the man behind The Cairo Gang but the press release tells me he's from Chicago, has an album out on Narnark and has toured the UK with John Dwyer in his pre-Thee Oh Sees guise as OCS. This is enough to prick my interest. 'Twyxt Wyrd sounds like pure Thrill Jockey style Chicago! It's got the warmth, precision and attention to detail i love about Chicago musicians ...

It's got the warmth, precision and attention to detail i love about Chicago musicianship. I can hear elements of Town and Country, The Sea and Cake, Vida, State River Widening, Pullman and a bunch of other great sounds here. This music is loose in the sense that it has a jazzy feel but in essence it's a folk record with the basic traditions rejigged to benefit the needs of the composer. Intimate, heart warming stuff it most certainly is and with a voice as rich and inviting as Emmett's he can't really fail. I applaud the Blackest Rainbow crew for breaking protocol and putting out such a beautiful collection of tracks. Totally ace. Best thing i've heard this week.
