The latest Durutti Column opus is the double CD A Paean To Wilson, a tribute to his old buddy Tony who used to do this Factory label what you might've heard of. His voice is the first thing heard, uttering the typically antagonistic cheek of "Are you a technician, or is this an art form?" Across the two discs we're treated to variety of Vini Reilly's tasteful styles, heavy on the inimitable guitar playing (duh) and often classically-inspired as per usual but also branching out into places I've personally not heard him go before, like the early tracks which range from full-on Eastern mysticism a la Grails (with distorto-shredding!) to a feel that evokes the charming naivety of the early fusions in the 'world music' boom of the 80's.. Some of it works and some of it doesn't. Certainly not everything here is working for me (such as the semi-cover of Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On') but some of it is amongst the best stuff I've heard from him recently and even the missteps are quite touching, given the context.
