Recorded during the same sessions that spawned Giant Steps, Coltrane Jazz can be considered equal, although Giant Steps has the edge because it was how a lot of people got introduced to John Coltrane's fully developed sound. Even so, you find Coltrane trying out the split tones he uses later on in his career, such as on "Harmonique" and also the closing of "Fifth House" and "Like Sonny". It also exemplifies what I like best about Coltrane - like Miles Davis and Charles Mingus and such, he took the task of making an album seriously and it shows the care he took into making a supreme listening experience. To close, this being the album that Coltrane released after he ignited a revolution with his saxophone on Giant Steps, you might be surprised to find that Coltrane Jazz is quite surprisingly restrained and conservative.
