These New Puritans. Promising to deliver something new & exciting, this new 10" is already dividing opinion in the office. One side of the room is curious & uncynical - he reckons the post kuduro/grime feel of 'We Want War' is initially reminiscent of something from the Nettle/Soot records/Filistine stable, then there's a whole chamber ensemble entering stage left, halfway through to fuck your perceptions up further. The other portion of the Norman posse, like the detectives from 'Hot Fuzz' sneer and spit the words "Lo Fidelity All stars or summat" & "Yeah Yeah" across the room. That ancient, genre splicing collective have been mentioned in the office several times recently. Maybe they were genuine pioneers? I just thought they were a bunch of shit big beat chancers? Anyway, I personally think this "comeback" single is quite a subtle, rhythmic, hypnotic & beautiful piece of music from these young English Estuary based rule book taunters. The flip sides are curious slithers of neo-classical minimalist dabbling, mere tentative sketches. So at least they're trying new things out like they promised they always would. Cool! Aroma: fresh daffodils, old bookshops, creaky tearooms, paranoia
