"That's not the real Neil" barked a particularly discerning Neil Young fan when I dared to suggest that 'Harvest' was my favourite album. Proper fans may prefer 'Trans' but for any newcomer to Neil Young, this is the one to start with. It's a lovely late '60's folk album with a consistent feel throughout and a sound that set the blueprint for his sporadic 'sensible' albums over the years. Just because it's popular it shouldn't be dismissed.

- Harvest by Neil Young
10/10 Penrith Steve 20th February 2016
After reading the description to this I'm not sure which Neil Young fan would claim that it's not the real Neil. It is his most popular and readily available album, but it's also an absolute gem. The opening plod of "Out On The Weekend", the heartfelt title track, the conscise country-folk-pop brilliance of "Heart of Gold", the perfect "Old Man" and the utterly classic "The Needle and the Damage Done" are among his best songs and show him as a soulful singer songwriter at the peak of his powers. Yes, less obvious albums like "On The Beach" are perfect too, but that's no reason to dismiss a solid gold classic like this. I urge everyone to buy it and cherish it.
