Great to see this one being reissued on vinyl after all these years. Tanya Donnelly has been an alt-rock staple for nigh-on thirty years now, featuring in Throwing Muses, the Breeders and Belly (which is a hell of a CV, when you think about it), as well as releasing solo records - albeit of varying quality - in more recent times. Star is well up there with her best work - starts dark with a couple of brooding slow-burners, but then the pop-pills really kick in, Feed the Tree is a 90s classic.
There are loads of great tunes on here - Dusted, Gepetto, and Slow Dog to name but three, as well as the goth-tinged Low Red Moon and the weird acoustic strumalong of Untogether near the end. If her lyrics were a little less left-field and the songs a little less skronky they could have been absolutely massive cos her vocals are stellar and she's a brilliant performer on stage, but in the end Belly just made two classic albums and then disappeared. For those that remember it'll be great to hear these songs all over again, and if you've never heard them before, you could be in for a real treat if you take a punt on this one.
9/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 19th May 2016
“Star”, Belly’s debut album is great. I’ve always thought it had a bit of goth feel to the first to tracks “Someone To Die For” and “Angel”. By the time “Dusted” breaks out of the speakers however, that feeling is gone. What we have, in fact, is classic indie rock album. “Gepetto”, “Slow Dog” and “Feed The Tree” are classic, catchy pop songs and are up there with great songs Tanya Donnelly wrote in Throwing Muses like “Not To Soon” from “The Real Ramona”. They were great live too. I'm feeling all nostalgic now.....
