8/10 Phone Customer review, 18th September 2014
Buffalo Tom's fourth record was their stab at the 90s alternative mainstream. After the critical success of Let Me Come Over (a great but slightly bloated record that suffered from murky production), they hired the Robb Brothers; the production team who had brought sheen to the sound of the Lemonheads. The hope was that that sheen would result in similar sales. Big Red Letter Day isn't Let Me Come Over with polish; the music has
met the production somewhere near the middle, but Bufflo Tom's sound had been moving in that direction since their second album. Vocals are clearer, guitars are janglier and the drum sound (my biggest complaint about LMCO) is.. well how drums should sound. There's two or three filler tracks, but the album is still a very pleasant listen all these years later. If you are looking to try 90s bands you missed or weren't even born then and are looking to stray a little from the bands you see and hear on the nostalgia shows then this is probably the best place to start with this band.
