9/10 Michael Customer review, 18th September 2014
Wow, a superlative collection of funk and soul by the good people at Soul Jazz. Possibly the only criticism of this collection is that if you dig this type of music, you are likely to have a number of these tracks. Big hitters like Roy Ayers 'Coffy', Curtis Mayfields 'Pusherman' and Booker T 'Time Is Tight' will be familiar to most. If you haven't heard, let alone got Bobby Womack's 'Across 110th Street' then what's up with you? However there is plenty that may be new and it ain't filler.
Johnny Pate's 'Shaft In Africa' is a killer, full of percussion and funky intent, he also pops up with 'You can't Even Walk In The Park' is another beast. Gordon Staples 'Strung Out' is lovely, as the title suggests a groove topped with epic strings. Galt MaxDermotts Ed & Digger gives a different vibe, a slight contry twang offering variation. You are also treated to the near 10 minute 'Pursuit Of The Pimpmobile' for me Isaac Hayes finest cinematic musical moment, yes better than Shaft.
If you are a casual fan of blaxploitation films and their music, this is probably the only album you need. Those whose passion runs deeper will either have every track already, or find enough 'needs' versus 'gots' to make this equally essential. Lets face it this music is so cool, you could put it on in your 10 year old Honda Civic, drive past Headingley Arndale Centre, stop at the lights and still feel pretty badasss.
