9/10 Brian Staff review, 21 August 2009
Not aware of much available information on Aussie dreamfolksters The Ancients except I like the uber minimal style of their self-titled CD sleeve and they're mates with Minimum Chips. Something about them reminds me of a more stoned & homely Simian, slow-strummed, languid acoustic guitars and then there's this gorgeous psychedelic element that doesn't sound remotely contrived (unlike that old forgotten Manchester clan) Percussion is stark, rolling gently in the background as these lazy guitars kick out dinky, sleepy shapes that hover & fade, the vocals come flowing, easy, dreamy & mellow, so many ace little things happening that aren't apparent when battling against the constant chatter in this office. You need to privately immerse yourself in these organic, peaceful grooves. The production throughout is warm and enveloping, perfectly suited to the gently shambling star-gazing nature of the music which oft reminds me of a divine cross between the NY's legendary Eggs & the spaced early 00's psychedelia of, say, Parsley Sound. Further discussion with old timer Philthy conjures up memories of The Essex Green & Ladybug Transistor but I must stress these guys aren't on some rose tinted retro trip, rather just producing passionate, lovely timeless songs that resonate in my head! Pretty limited, all hand stamped, die cut recycled card sleeves

10/10 Andy Customer review, 9th October 2009

Can't stop playing this. Proper good songs, understated delivery, imagination in instrumentation - shreds my heart, this. It's as BrianĀ and Clint say, but with a Ray Davies touch to the lyrics and delivery.

10/10 Peter Hollo Customer review,

OH BOY!Those folks down south in Melbourne do us Aussies proud once again!I did wonder whether Moteer releasing some ol' indie band was going to disappoint, but no, this is first class songwriting, timeless stuff, understated and lovely. Three thumbs up!
