In the Fishtank by Sparklehorse & Fennesz

In the Fishtank was an ongoing collaborative series that saw the music distributor Konkurrent pair sometimes unlikely artists together, stick them in a studio for two days and hope for the best. One of the most bizarre pairings saw late US alt rockers Sparklehorse go up alongside Austrian glitch master Fennesz. The results were stunning   - a rare breed of soundscape where acoustic instruments blended perfectly with electronics.

You wouldn't expect Sparklehorse and Fennesz to bump into each other that often, but one bump has turned out to be significant and has grinded out the latest In The Fishtank which I didn't even realise was still a going concern. It generally amounts to a gorgeous and relaxing listen, with Mark Linkous's stargazing country guitar plucking often gently dominating the grainily atmospheric manipulations of Fennesz, although some tracks go the other way and burrow deep into ambient territory, broken up with the odd noisy plateau. One of these two is a quintessentially European artist and one could only have come from America so hearing them meld so gracefully together is quite a magical thing. Proper NATO shit.
