- Light In August by Danny Norbury
This is a much needed re-issue of Norbury’s debut full length record from 2009 and includes bonus tracks from his earlier EP on Static Caravan. Once at the forefront of the neo-classical revolution, Norbury has been quieter in recent years, seemingly content to add his weight to releases by the likes of The Boats, Nancy Elizabeth and Library Tapes. Its a shame as this is a stellar album of soothing pieces for piano and cello.
A patient, unhurried record, Norbury becomes his own one man band so to speak, overlaying his gorgeous cello over the simple piano prods to breathtaking effect. The piano is generally a bedrock for the cello which uses a myriad of tones, double tracked at times for a lovely thick sound. Although using slightly different core instrumentation, the album most reminds me of Brave Timbers excellent ‘For Every Day You Lost’ (which surely must be due a re-issue soon) but its safe to say that fans of Rachels, Max Richter, Peter Broderick and Johann Johannson will very very at home here.
With 40 plus copies sold by us first time round it may already be nicely nestling in your collection but if not, this is well worth picking up.

Amazing record, full of spirit, patience and beauty. One of the best releases of last year by a country mile.
