- The Swimmer by Alice Gun
8/10 Li'l Biz Staff review, 09 July 2009Alice Gun has that seductive tone to her vocal that I associate with PJ Harvey and the like. Part sinister, part seductive would be a better description. Everyone in the office agrees this sounds a lot like PJ Harvey so it's not just me. We also agree that 'The swimmer' is a top tune, both eerie and uplifting in its atmosphere. B-side 'Minty Fresh' is really subtle, just a grand piano accompanied by double bass, glockenspiel and a singular vocal contribution. It's a simple and effective country ballad, kinda little Black Heart Procession but not quite as bleak. I think she's singing about brushing her teeth. Why not, huh? Limited to 300 hand numbered copies so you better be quick yo!
10/10 Edith Sitwell Customer review, 13th July 2009Grabbed this at the single launch last week after the gig was recommended to me. Dead right on the PJ Harvey thing. This woman has a real presence about her live and the strings add real venom amd beauty in equal measure to everything they do. She has one of those voices that senses she has lived life. The b-side minty fresh is one of those spine tinglers that has enough venom to keep it away from being vomit inducing. I also loved the sleeve a hark back to the days when labels cared about everything that went into a single. Keep a look out for this band they are going to be cult faves before long.
10/10 Campo Customer review,
This is great stuff - highly recommended. The a-side is a funeral-paced brooder full of tension - the kind of dark, sexually chargednoir-folk that Nick Cave or The White Stripes produce so regularly. It's not radio-friendly,and won't make you dance, but only the most ADHD-riven Lily Allen fan would fail tobe completely transfixed by it.The b-side is a perfectly formedlullaby that spends its first half offering sweet glockenspiel and piano underneath some of the most unsettlingly evocative lyrics you'll hear allyear, before a coda overpowers the bleakness with a spine-tingle to rival Radioheador Mogwai at their most ethereal.Easily worth £3.49 of anyone's money!
