8/10 Phil Staff review, 11 June 2009
I was reasonably intrigued by this Xenis Emputae Travelling Band if nothing more for the name really. I barely know what any of those words mean apart from band. The Pyrognomic Glass is an LP by a chap called Phil Legard who also plays in Ashtray Navigations. Co incidentally the LP is released on Memoirs Of An Aesthete which is the label ran by Phil todd is also in Ashtray Navigations. It's all starting to make sense.... Included in the LP is a 28 page booklet called "Abital - or Conferences with the Genii of Nocturnal and Diurnal Dew in vii Chapters" which may make sense to students of natural philosophy. On the other hand it may not? I don't know. Side 1 of the LP is drone based, puntuated by bells and chimes which keep your ears sweet throughout the journey. It's both dark and light at the same time and it's really rather nice. The flipside is a more haunting prospect with a more ghostly and eerie aquatic sound which is as appealing. Certainly worth picking up if you're into drone and you missed the original CDR press from 2005. Nice!!
