Japanese girl-trio The 18.104.22.168’s have been providing the world with punked-up rockabilly sounds since 1989, and this compilation captures their earliest singles. Much of this material has never really been properly available outside of Japan, so Bomb The Rocks is a great opportunity to get on board with some high-energy joy music.

There have been some tremendous Japanese rock bands in the last couple of decades - Melt Banana, the King Brothers and the legendary Guitar Wolf, to name but three - and these are up there with the best of them. A quick glance at the song titles - Motorcycle Go-Go-Go, My Boyfriend From Outer Space, I Was A Teenage Cavewoman - will give you a pretty good flavour of what you're dealing with here. It's a beguiling mix of ramshackle rockabilly, surf guitar, garage rock and 50s girl group pop, mashed together through a fuzzbox with a fat wall of distortion and a shit-ton of reverb, and generally sounds like it was recorded inside a metal bucket instead of a studio. They're also total mistresses of the art of sounding loose and sloppy but actually being tighter than Kylies hot pants, something that I reckon all the best garage bands do. It's high energy stuff, even on the slower songs, and there are more ear-worm melodies than you can shake a shitty stick at. There are twenty eight tracks here, all of pretty high quality, so it's a total steal at this price too. Great fun.
