Whoah, Jack Penate's a right dreamboat inne? After looking at the picture they've used on the cover for Everything Is New (which, incidentally, is EXACTLY the same picture they used for the artwork a couple of singles ago) I'm once again cursing the lack of a work shower because I could really do with a proper cold 'un to get my mind back on the job. I think his music's pulling off quite a tidy trick to be honest, at first it's a bit irritating and there are elements that by rights he really shouldn't be allowed to get away with, but after a while you kind of come to terms with the fact that it's actually really well put together, eclectically styled pop. Obviously the mentions of gospel, hip-hop and afrobeat (or what passes for it in these post-Vampire Weekend days) are there to give an easy bit of cred but they are there, albeit in a totally superficial way but hey, this is chart-courting shit so it's hardly going to be reinventing the rulebook and it does what it says on the tin very well indeed. Plus there's a song called 'Let's All Die' to get the goths into it.. Although his terrifying vocal similarity to a cheerier Robert Smith might've done that already.
