Too many Pere Ubu records have been allowed to slip out of print, so here, to coincide with some shows, the group are reissuing a few early records on Fire. The Modern Dance is their searing 1978 debut, a furiously powerful mash of industrial-tinged rock and weird concreté sounds. Remastered from the original tapes.

"The Modern Dance" was the debut album by Pere Ubu from 1978. It is a genuinely strange album. It has bits that rock such as "Non-alignment Pact", but then it doesn't rock like other bands rock - there's a flappy bass and clean sounding guitars led the the crazy and indefatigable energy of front man David Thomas. Then there's the twisted and spooky "Laughing" which includes the line "My baby says when the devil comes we'll shoot him with a gun". It's new wave, but not like any other new wave. Its punky spikes are punctuated by short, desolate soundscapes. It creeps, crawls, screams and whispers. Essential purchase.
