8/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 1st November 2014

Two of Beat Happening’s best songs appear on “Jamboree”, their 2nd LP, from 1988. “Indian Summer” is simple with its basic drums and guitar but that plus Calvin Johnston’s vocal makes this an absolute triumph of entirely non-technical music. A tale of innocence with great lyrical imagery: “Motorbike to cemetery, picnic on wild berries, french toast with molasses, croquet and baked Alaskas”. “Crashing Through” is an amazing 76 seconds of lo-fi, punky pop.

“Midnight A-Go-Go” features guitar by Gary Lee Conner of the Screaming Trees who, along with Mark Lanegan assisted Steve Fisk on production duties, although this record is so sparse, I think it was more a case of them hanging round the studio at the time of recording. I will always love Beat Happening as they remind me of my first foray into small record shops in big cities digging ever deeper looking for music that other people don’t like.
