Old fat crooner face Cass McCombs is back again on Domino after his last odd lounge flop that left Phil & I - serious fans up till that point - a little nonplussed and confused. After the jangling majesty of songs such as 'Sacred Heart', why am I being subjected to Richard Hawley Jr? He sounds about 12 and the music on new single 'Dreams Come True Girl' is verging on sub 50s diner pap compared to his rich, understated indie pop gems released on Moniter & 4AD. If you're going to do music like Chris Isaak then do it properly you nostalgic twerp! Nice to see he's still doing that discreet Mozzer style falsetto when no-ones looking! Funny, I think the sweet extra track, 'Minimum Wage' has comforting echoes of his rawer, hazy, jangly past so is therefore the tune that i'm drawn to more. He's obviously been moulded for a more commercial market these days which leaves some of his work seeming a little insipid & sterile with the increased production gloss. And so on. 7"/CDs on Domino

10/10 patrick Customer review,

the time signatures that cass employs on this record are much more complex than anything on his earlier albums and the sheer amount of toil that he obviously put into the writing of these songs situates the record among the best of his work. i didn't know you all enjoyed jangling so much across the pond!
