Viva! LA Woman by Cibo Matto

Cibo Matto (‘crazy food’ in Italian) were a New York duo with sharp creative instincts and a sense of fun! Their debut full-length Viva LA Woman was first released in 1996, where it absorbs the period’s popular trip-hop sound and views it through a New York filter. Still sounds good and fresh on this reissue, courtesy of Rhino.

Certain bands are hard to describe, and even harder to pigeonhole. Cibo Matto is one such band, with their sparkling musical palette and their even more impressive menu. Really, how many bands are brave enough to compare all human emotions to foodstuffs? This is some off the wall music, which certainly does not take itself too seriously, but it does provide a rollickingly fun listen from beginning to end. The only weak spot in the whole affair is the track, "Theme", as it is simply dragged out for too long.
