I've noticed a small resurgence in what i would define as purest post-rock releases trickling through the norman office. Epic instrumentals and massive soundscapes that engulf the listener and are commonly used as the backing music to nature or environmental programs. Trouble Books new record the 'Endless pool' could in some ways be defined as proper post-rock record. It sounds pretty similar to mogwai it's ability to manipulate tone and harmony to create a warm, ethereal music that offers instant relaxation, and this really is chilled stuff. I don't hear a drumkit at all through occasional electronic blips and blops pass as a percussive element. I guess being a vocal lead band is where they stray from the traditional formula. Vocals glide the expansions of reverberating drone and melodic skeletal bass and remind me of the drummer from Yo le Tengo circa 'And then nothing turned itself inside out', delicate and peaceful though not as melancholic. Artwork wise this duo are on to a winner. Loving crafted packaging with a beautiful illustration adorning the cover and a free cd-r copy with each 12". Check it out.
