8/10 Li'l Biz 05 May 2009
'Gathering Blue' is a vinyl only release from Equation Records that compiles eight new compositions from Aidan Baker with a cover of Joy Division's '24 Hours' and an extended remix of "The Cicada Sings Our Love Song" by Building Castles Out Of Matchsticks which was originally released in 2005 on the ultra-limited and long-deleted Arcolepsy Records CD "Remixes". It's available on beautiful aquatic splatter blue double vinyl with amazing artwork. For those familiar with Aiden Baker this is an essential selection and a rare vinyl release which is limited to 444 copies, (I assume the other 66 are for friends, family and for promotional purposes?? Who knows). Baker creates blissful waves of music for relaxation and meditation purposes and, for the most part it's quite uplifting stuff for Aidan. Occasional post industrial, doom ridden moments creep in to mix but don't let that spoil your enjoyment of what is an intensely relaxing, if a little unnerving collection. The Joy Division cover is tastefully done but the 'Building Castles Out Of Matchsticks' remix is probably my fave bit of the record. I know I always witter on about the artwork but I really like the gatefold cover for his record. It reminds me of 'Rustic Houses, Forlorn Valleys' by Hood so yeah, it's a good cover. Good album too.
