9/10 Brian Staff review, 07 May 2009
Another smashing double header split LP from the Blackest Rainbow stable next. Taiga Remains (Alex Cobb who runs the Students Of Decay label) are up first with a sprawling atmospheric piece called 'Mengku From Mengsa', all shimmering metal bowls and cosmic drone. The acoustics on this vinyl are just terrific and the general aura of this particular recording screams astral trancendence giving way to a deliciously foreboding plateau. Your head becomes completely enveloped by the eerie widescreen hums, tinkles, clangs & snaking metallic resonance. Phil is reminded of an imaginary Tibetan Saucer-Eyed Hound he had as a child and Brett is dreaming of smoking monkeys. Just to confuse matters, RV Paintings' (Brian Pyle of Starving Weirdos) side 'Emission Spectrum' is cut from a very similar cloth and so continues the fabulously creepy vibe i.e well drifting & meditative whilst erring on the side of faintly ominous. I like the fact RV Paintings list "hollowed bone" & "water pouring" as instruments. Fabulous work, I recommend some quality headphones as this is quite something! Art is by Tarentel's Jefre Cantu Ledesma!
