Lush to have the Soundmurderer 'Toned Down EP' 12" to lift my spirits this afternoon. You can always rely on a Soundmurderer record to give you a big shot of sonic adrenalin and this fine EP is no exception to begin with but in general is mellower than we're used to from Detroit junglist (and loads of other styles) Todd Osborne. 'Dubplate Murderer' kicks off with some Jamaican soundclash banter and then proceeds into brain frazzling hyper metallic industrial jungle with tumbling amens and big agressive synths. A stormer of a tune. 'Logical Volume Identifier' has layers of melodies that make me think of Cylob. It's a sweet track and a more subtle, cheerful number than you'd expect from Soundmurderer. '8th Stage' on the flip has similar melodies and synth sounds which are kinda melancholy and emotive, again making me think of somthing that could have come out on Rephlex years ago. When the beats kick in they move the track along pleasantly in a 'Feed me Werid Things' era Squarepusher way.'Awamori' has a nostalgic feel to it, I guess it's probably an old track that's been dug out of his archive. This is kinda mellow too. A cool suprising EP on WeMe.
