Coming From Reality by Rodriguez

The story of American singer-songwriter Rodriguez has been much covered over the years particularly in the Searching for the Sugarman film. His debut Cold Fact is a stone cold (fact) classic but less is known about his second (and final album to date) Coming From Reality. It again pitches Rodriquez with Dennis Coffey and features further stream of consciousness type songs that reference Bob Dylan but has a sound all of its own.

This guy is a poet. He has his own voice but references other artists; like sampling, before sampling was a thing. The production is a mixture of country, orchestral, soul and psychedelic but throughout, his voice remains the iron thread.

When I listen to his song, I’m transported to the bars, streets, relationships and political climate he is expressing. He’s authentic, he’s a gem, he's a legend.

As soon as my wife to be heard the second song she turned my stereo off. Fortunately, I do happen to have some taste and could clearly recognise from the first song, Climb up on my Music, that this Rodriguez guy (whoever he is) was definitely worth a cheeky little listen when nobody was looking. And I have to admit, the second song was a let down after the first, and to be honest so was the whole album. But every now and again this Jesus/Wizard looking guy seemed to redeem himself with certain points in the album where his voice seemed to push me forward a little quicker through the daily drudge of spreadsheets and difficult conversation. There is real passion and a unique innocence in this guy's voice that reminds me of being sixteen again and genuinely believing I was going to be the next Kurt Cobain. So, if all this guy can do to me is make me believe in my own mislaid genius once again then so be it. That's more than good enough for me.
