Not sure where I stand with a lot of modern electronic music. I get a buzz of excitement when something genuinely pioneering clatters into my conscience but like with dubstep & wonky, funky, chunky and wanky all rinsing clubber's faces off, i'm having trouble with the myriad spliced "genres" currently doing the rounds and am, I suspect, beginning to feel a little old & tired. Three new 12"s on Planet Mu are in this week and i've picked the one by Gemmy called 'Supligen' as I'm unfamiliar with this producer. The title track in particular sounds pretty cool indeed, kind of showcasing one of those rattlesnake style half-pace beat, a slightly squelchy & playful bass line that's quite conversational and doesn't get on your tits - both tracks here are possibly quite inspired by the recent Harmonic 313 stuff in fact - little flecks of 8-bit space invader noise and some lovely atmospheric synth stabs. I didn't think much at first but on 3rd listen it's totally working for me. 'BT Tower' on the flip has a slightly more in-yr-face zig-zagging flutter ala Skream et al but for all its fashionable slo-step mind-bumming there's some lovely understated production touches on this tune. I'd like to hear this one with just the bassline, its subtle soundscapes and the beats, bet it would be up there with some of the stuff on the Fly-Lo LP.
