8/10 gbar Customer review, 10th May 2017
Although they recorded their third album for Thrill Jockey in their own 12x12’ studio in Virginia, the three brothers that makes up Pontiak avoids creating excessive jams from the comfort of their own home on Maker. Straightforward stoner-rock numbers makes up the first part of the album, with “Heat Pleasure” being the highlight, with its torturing waves of feedback bring up a vision of a scorching summer day. Of course, the album's 14-minute title-track centerpiece is where the siblings are able to gestate each other's ideas until it is realized and progressively comes up with fresh approaches through sheer unrelenting repetition. But it isn't all searing desert rock: “Seminal Shining” finds the band back to their traditional folk roots, with brushed drums and an acoustic guitar accompanying Van Carney’s baritone voice. On Maker, the three brothers showcases a good amount of restraint and maturity, combining their adventurous avant-garde tendencies with their passion for classic southern rock.
