Thee Oh Sees began life humbly enough as an outlet for Jon Dwyer (Pink and Brown, Coachwhips, Burmese, Hospitals to name but a few) to make folksy, experimental home spun recordings under the guise of O.C.S (Orange County Sound) and has, over the course of time, evolved into a full on quality band. Accompanied by guitarist Petey Dammit, drummer Mike Shoun and vocalist Brigid Dawson, Dwyer has found a safe haven for crafting perfect psyche pop and garage rock. Help is the follow up to last years awesome The Masters Bedroom is Worth Spending the Night In and on first listen you can tell immediately that the bar has risen further. I've only listened to this record a couple of times but the songs are already sticking like flies. I'm humming them around the office oblivious of less worthy material dominating the hi-fi. I'm a happy humming business lady. The obvious difference between Help and previous efforts is the overt influence of Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd, this means a greater focus on creating strange and wonderful melodies. The vocal play-off between Dwyer and Dawson is both beautiful and haunting and the riffs are pretty much all killer. Help is enhanced further by awesome reverb-drenched production that perfectly recreates the distinct mood of 60s psyche, garage and folk that resonates so strongly in this collection. It's also got a sweet painting of a rainbow bat on the cover!!! Yes!
