4/10 Brian Staff review, 03 April 2009

Oh, someone has to plumb the depths and the champs of uselessness this week are the buzzy cockney indie yawnfest that is Art Brut.

Now, when they unleashed the brilliant 'Formed A Band' we were quite taken with their lightly cynical brand of novelty guitar pop but now they've hit a creative brick wall and are actually emulating tedious Fierce Panda-signed no-marks who would have been third on the bill 10 years ago at the Camden Falcon. There's a spiky melodic tinge to new single 'Alcoholics Unanimous' but it's all flattened by the banal, deadpan chanty lyrics that scream "lowest common denominator", gutter poetry for folks in the terraces to nod along to.

I know they're probably being "archly ironic" but I really can't see the enduring appeal. If this band were from the Leeds underground they'd be laughed out of town for being such idiots. As they're from sunny "anything goes - whoop look at us we're in a fucking band" London, they get on the cover of all the music rags. The perfect musical foil for Boris Johnson's swinging metropolis.
