Gareth Davis & Steven R. Smith have a collaborative effort, 'Westering', out on the ever intoxicating home of the avant-garde, Important. Mr. Smith provides screeing, squalling, drifting, droning & wailing guitar in many different forms. His endeavors work for me like an abstract road movie soundtrack, atmospheric & abrasive shards of crying & sighing sonic fallout complemented by Mr. Davis's perky, free spirited bass clarinet. When 'Surmises' kicks in, i'm totally soothed by the sudden harmonious blend cooked up by the pair. Almost as affecting as moments from the last Stars of the Lid LP, this track is like a softly swaying cushion of sweet chamber ambience, as pretty & moving as anything I could imagine. 'Source & Thereof' imagines a more hostile plateau where this malevolent fog of feedbacking guitar is interrupted with minute conversational bursts of tentative clarinet. Side 2 opens with 'The Pulpit' where the clarinet duels in a free jazz face off with Ry Cooderish bursts of atmospheric desert blown guitar. There's lots of vibrant hues to this beautifully textured & remarkable album. Even the artwork is great, silver on blue being one of my most beloved colour schemes. Seriously recommended for the more adventurous organic sound junkie. Vinyl only in uber-heavy duty sleevie.
