I'm not particularly familiar with the work of Jack Rose but first impressions suggest that this guy is a genuine virtuoso of the six and twelve string acoustic guitar. The guy's got pure skill and with the help of recording wizard and good friend Jason Meagher has produced a memorable collection of hauntingly beautiful acoustic instrumentals in the form of ''The Black Dirt Sessions'. This was recorded at Meagher's Black Dirt studios (hence the name), New York, in breaks from a mammoth tour which may explain why it sounds so relaxed and focused. The playing is flawless and the recording is both lively and crisp which makes for a very atmospheric listen. I should imagine you'll be well into this stuff if you already enjoy the works of John Fehey, James Blackshaw and, to an extant, artists like Yellow 6 who may go about things slightly differently but conjure up a similar vibe to tape. An excellent record pressed on the old style, high gloss cover and 180mg vinyl. Oh, the deal sweetener....
